Elementary at Central
A Central Adventure…
From curious explorers to accomplished learners, our Elementary program takes students on an academic and spiritual odyssey that will prepare them for Middle School and beyond.
“Our theme is showing Jesus, in how we talk to our friends, how we act at recess, what we do in every aspect of our life. We start with talking about creation in the classroom and that everything we have belongs to God and was made by God.”
Lori Braem, Kindergarten Teacher
“Jesus is interwoven into everything we do from our morning meeting time when we pray to our praise songs that we sing, brought into science lessons and math when we talk about order of things. We talk about how cool it is that God created this earth and the animals that are on it; we talk about gravity and force and motion and how God is in all of it.”
Lisa Jerve, 1st Grade Teacher
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students are learning how to Know (John 3:16), Grow (1 Thessalonians 3:12), and Show (Ephesians 4:32) God’s love through their schoolwork and actions. Kindergarten is a time where students start developing their social skills on how to be a Godly citizen. Students continue to build their foundations of reading and writing through understanding letters and their sounds. In Bible class, students learn more about who God is and how He loves us.
1st Grade
In 1st grade, students work on Being the Light of the world (Matthew 5:14) by learning about how we contribute to our communities and understanding our role in our town, state, country, and world. In math, students work on adding and subtracting to 100. Students experience their biggest leaps in reading during their first grade year as they expand their vocabulary and build on their writing, listening, and speaking skills. The science program includes trips to the Nelson Farm and the planetarium, where they see God’s design here on earth through animals and crops, and His splendor in the universe.
2nd Grade
In 2nd grade, students are Mountain Movers (Matthew 17:20-21). In English Language Arts, Students make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. In math, students work on adding and subtracting double digit numbers. A highlight from 2nd grade math is the food drive where students work on adding collected food items and their weights that are delivered to the local food shelf around Christmas to bless those who are in need. Students also enjoy social studies and science learning experiences at the Historical Society and Sibley State Park.
3rd Grade
In 3rd grade, students are bold and courageous (Joshua 1:9) as they continue to discover why their story matters in God’s greater story. In Bible class, students walk through the Old Testament and learn about their identities in relationship with God. Students learn multiplication and division facts and start using long division in math. In English Language Arts, students are reading to learn through their thematic units such as the human body, animal classification, the Roman civilization, Colonial America, and other Science and Social Studies topics.
4th Grade
In 4th grade, students Grow in his Grace and Knowledge (2 Peter 3:18). In Bible class, students spend time studying and learning the book of Proverbs. Students also learn about the different states and their capitals and practice their public speaking skills by presenting their findings to the class. Journaling and reflection help students build their confidence in writing and self-expression. Students enjoy learning about God’s creation through science classes and their learning experience at the Minnesota Science Museum.
5th Grade
In 5th grade, students reflect on how their stories and unique gifts contribute to God’s Kingdom (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). Students will continue to work through studying the Bible, focusing on the New Testament. In math, students learn about algebra and strengthen their skills in fractions. A highlight of 5th grade is the Wax Museum. Students will write a research paper on a notable person and their influence on society. They will then use that knowledge to create a presentation and portray that person at our Central Showcase in the spring. Students finish the year with a science experience at the Southwest Minnesota State University Planetarium where they enjoy God’s creation.
