Counseling Department

The goal of our Counseling Department is to help students achieve success in their future. Our School Counselor helps students prepare for their future in a variety ways by providing access to college and career information and assisting students in areas of academic achievement and planning.

In cooperation with Class Advisors, the School Counselor provides direction and guidance in the class registration process, to help equip students for post-graduate success.  Our Student Academic Pathway also assists students in the course planning process and includes course descriptions and credit requirements for graduation.

College Readiness

Hosting College Representatives - Recruiters are invited to campus from many frequently attended institutions, including Dordt University, Ridgewater College, Grand Canyon University, Alexandria Technical & Community College, and many others.

On-Campus College Visits - Junior and Senior students are allowed two two days per school year to participate in college visits and attend college fairs.

PSEO - Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, through enrollment in and successful completion of college courses at participating postsecondary institutions in Minnesota.  Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses.  The Guidance Counselor can assist students in planning and enrolling in postsecondary courses.  PSEO students are not charged tuition, cost of books, or fees for items that are required to participate in a course, but the class must be taken during the school year to be free.

Financial Aid and College Application Assistance - Information Sessions are held for students and parents to learn more about applying for enrollment, financial aid, and scholarships. The Guidance Counselor regularly corresponds with students to update them on scholarship opportunities and deadlines.

Hosting the US Army Recruiting Office - Representatives visit campus to talk with students who are interested in a future in the military.

Career Exploration

Winterim - This week-long program provides innovative curriculum that engages high school students in a purposeful learning experience. Students can explore a variety of subjects outside of the traditional school curriculum, exposing them to new ideas, potential careers, and lifetime skills.

Junior ASVAB Testing - The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students.

WC-CEO Program - This year-long program meets every morning at area businesses where Junior and Senior students are immersed in real life learning experiences and are mentored on the opportunity to take risks, manage the results, and learn from their outcomes from area mentors. Several Central students have participated over the past two years, and program representatives visited campus several times to present the program to future interested students.

“When talking with students about their future plans, we look at everything through a faith-based lens.”

Malorie Antony, School Counselor

Testing Information

The ACT test provides important information beyond assessing achievement. Studies have shown that ACT scores, combined with a student’s grade point average and other factors, can help predict a student’s success in college. Moreover, it can act as a broader yardstick to compare students across for scholarships and academic assessment.
